European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
